How Much Data Do You Need in Japan?
How much mobile data do you need in Japan? Compare light, everyday and heavy usage for rail planning, navigation, translation, streaming and Shinkansen travel — plus fixed-data vs unlimited plan choice.
Published 27 September 2026 · By Roamza
For most travellers, 500MB–1GB per day covers Maps, rail planning, translation and messaging. Japan offers both fixed-data and unlimited plans: a 10GB fixed-data plan gives you more high-speed data overall, while an unlimited daily plan gives you 1GB per day then unlimited at up to 256kbps — you never run out completely.
How much data you need in Japan depends on how you travel — a few days in Tokyo uses less than a fortnight with Shinkansen trips and evening streaming. Japan is unusual among Roamza destinations because it offers both fixed-data plans and unlimited daily plans, so the right choice depends on your usage pattern.

How data usage works in Japan
Japan's travel apps are different from Southeast Asia's:
- Google Maps — essential for navigating Tokyo's train stations, which have multiple levels and exits. Active routing uses 120–150MB per hour.
- Japan Travel by Navitime / Japan Transit Planner — rail journey planning. These apps load timetables and route data — roughly 30–50MB per day of regular use.
- Google Translate — camera translation for menus, signs and station names. Kanji and kana translation uses data for each scan.
- WhatsApp / LINE — messaging. LINE is Japan's most popular messaging app. Text uses very little data (5–10MB per hour).
- Social media — Instagram and Facebook browsing use 100–200MB per hour; video autoplay pushes it higher.
- Streaming — Netflix or YouTube in standard definition uses around 1GB per hour; HD uses 3GB or more.
Light use: Tokyo city breaks
If you're in Tokyo for a few days and mostly using Maps, messaging and restaurant searches:
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (2 hours active) | 300MB |
| Japan Transit Planner | 40MB |
| Google Translate (occasional) | 30MB |
| WhatsApp + LINE messaging | 10MB |
| Restaurant searches | 50MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~430MB |
For a 3–5 day Tokyo break, a 3GB or 5GB fixed-data plan covers this comfortably. Alternatively, an unlimited daily plan gives you 1GB of high-speed data per day — more than enough for light use. See the Japan plans page for current options.
Standard use: everyday Japan travel
Most travellers fall into this category — Maps, rail planning, translation, social media, messaging and some music streaming.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (2 hours active) | 300MB |
| Japan Transit Planner | 40MB |
| Google Translate (regular) | 50MB |
| Social media (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Music streaming (2 hours) | 100MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~640MB |
For a 1–2 week trip, a 10GB fixed-data plan covers this well. An unlimited daily plan also works — 1GB per day of high-speed data, then unlimited at up to 256kbps.
Heavy use: streaming, hotspot and long Shinkansen rides
If you're streaming video on long Shinkansen journeys, sharing hotspot, or working remotely:
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Social media (2 hours) | 300MB |
| Video streaming on train (2 hours SD) | 2GB |
| Video call (1 hour) | 400MB |
| Hotspot for laptop | 1–3GB+ |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~3–5GB+ |
For heavy use, a 20GB fixed-data plan gives you a large pool to draw from over 7–10 days. Alternatively, an unlimited daily plan's 1GB high-speed allowance will run out partway through the day — after that, you continue at up to 256kbps, which is enough for messaging and browsing but not for video.
Fixed-data vs unlimited: which should you pick?
Japan is the one Roamza destination where you can choose between fixed-data and unlimited plans:
Fixed-data plans (1GB to 20GB, 3 to 30 days): Best if you want a set data pool and don't want to think about daily allowances. A 10GB plan over 7 days gives you roughly 1.4GB per day of high-speed data — more than the unlimited plan's 1GB. But once the pool is gone, you have no data at all.
Unlimited daily plans (1 to 30 days): Best if you want the safety net of never running out completely. You get 1GB of high-speed data per day, then unlimited data at up to 256kbps. You never have zero data — but the reduced speed is slow for anything beyond messaging and basic browsing.
For most travellers, the unlimited daily plan is the simpler choice — you never run out completely, and 1GB per day covers Maps, rail planning, translation and messaging. If you stream regularly or use hotspot for work, a 10GB or 20GB fixed-data plan may suit better.
How FUP works on Japan unlimited plans
Roamza's Japan unlimited plans give you 1GB of high-speed data per day, then unlimited data at up to 256kbps. The reduced speed is enough for messaging, maps and basic browsing, but not for video streaming. Read more on the Fair Use page.

For most travellers, the unlimited daily plan is simpler — 1GB of high-speed data per day, then unlimited at up to 256kbps. If you stream regularly or use hotspot, a 10GB or 20GB fixed-data plan may give you more high-speed data overall.
Rail journey planning apps like Japan Transit Planner and Japan Travel by Navitime use roughly 30–50MB per day of regular use — they load timetables and route data, not heavy media.
1GB per day covers Maps, rail planning, translation and messaging for most travellers. If you stream video on Shinkansen rides, you'll hit the allowance and drop to 256kbps — use station Wi-Fi where available for video.
You can download Japanese language packs over Wi-Fi for offline translation. For live camera translation of kanji and kana, your eSIM data works normally.
Yes. Roamza's Japan plans support hotspot. Data used via hotspot counts against your daily high-speed allowance (unlimited plans) or your total data pool (fixed-data plans).
After 1GB of high-speed data per day, you get unlimited data at up to 256kbps. You stay connected for messaging and browsing, but video streaming will buffer.
