How Much Data Do You Need in Thailand?
How much mobile data do you need in Thailand? Compare light, everyday and heavy usage for Grab, Google Maps, messaging, streaming and island travel.
Published 27 September 2026 · By Roamza
For most travellers, 500MB–1GB per day covers maps, Grab, messaging and social media. Heavy use (streaming, hotspot) can push this to 3–5GB. Roamza's current Thailand plans give you 1GB of high-speed data per day, then unlimited at up to 512kbps.
How much data you need in Thailand depends on how you travel — a Bangkok city break uses far less than a fortnight hopping between islands. This guide breaks down typical usage so you can pick the right plan.

How data usage works
Your phone uses data whenever it connects to the internet over mobile data (not Wi-Fi). Different activities use very different amounts:
- Messaging (WhatsApp, LINE, iMessage) — very low, around 5–10MB per hour for text.
- Navigation (Google Maps) — around 120–150MB per hour of active routing, but only 1–2MB per hour for traffic updates if the route is already loaded.
- Web browsing — roughly 20–60MB per hour depending on page content.
- Social media — 100–200MB per hour for browsing; 500–800MB per hour if videos autoplay (Instagram, TikTok).
- Music streaming (Spotify, Apple Music) — around 45–60MB per hour at normal quality.
- Video streaming (Netflix, YouTube) — around 1GB per hour in standard definition; 3GB or more per hour in HD.
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Line) — roughly 200–700MB per hour depending on quality.
These are approximate estimates from multiple sources. Actual usage varies based on app settings, video quality and how often you use each app.
Light use: Bangkok city breaks
If you're in Bangkok for a few days and mostly using your phone for maps, Grab and messaging, you'll use relatively little data.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour active) | 150MB |
| Grab (a few rides) | 20MB |
| WhatsApp + LINE messaging | 10MB |
| Web browsing (1 hour) | 40MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~220MB |
For a 3–5 day city break, an unlimited daily plan covers this easily — the 1GB daily high-speed allowance is far more than you'll use. See the Thailand plans page for current options.
Standard use: everyday Thailand travel
Most travellers fall into this category — maps, Grab, social media, messaging and some music streaming.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (2 hours active) | 300MB |
| Grab (multiple rides) | 30MB |
| Social media (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Music streaming (2 hours) | 100MB |
| WhatsApp + LINE | 10MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~590MB |
For a 1–2 week trip, an unlimited daily plan works well — you get 1GB of high-speed data per day and never worry about running out.
Heavy use: streaming, hotspot and island travel
If you're streaming video, sharing hotspot with a laptop or travelling to islands where you rely on your phone for everything, your data needs jump.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Social media (2 hours) | 300MB |
| Video streaming (2 hours SD) | 2GB |
| Video call (1 hour) | 400MB |
| Hotspot for laptop | 1–3GB+ |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~3–5GB+ |
For heavy use, the unlimited daily plan's 1GB high-speed allowance may run out partway through the day. After that, you continue at up to 512kbps — enough for messaging and basic browsing, but streaming will buffer. If you stream regularly, plan to use Wi-Fi where available for video.
Island hopping: a different pattern
Thailand island-hopping is a special case. If you're on long-tail boats, ferries or minivans between islands, you'll have navigation running intermittently, plus messaging and social media. In the evening at your bungalow, you might stream a movie.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour intermittent) | 150MB |
| Grab/taxi apps | 20MB |
| Social media (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Evening video streaming (1 hour SD) | 1GB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~1.3GB |
For island-hopping, the 1GB daily high-speed allowance covers navigation and messaging. Evening streaming will push you past the allowance into the reduced-speed period — which is fine for messaging, but not for more video.
How FUP works on Thailand plans
Roamza's current Thailand plans are unlimited daily eSIMs. Each day you get 1GB of high-speed data, then unlimited data at up to 512kbps. The 1-day plan covers a single day; the 5-day plan covers a typical holiday.
After the 1GB daily allowance, you stay connected at the reduced speed — enough for messaging, maps and basic browsing, but not for video streaming. Read more on the Fair Use page.

1GB per day covers maps, Grab, messaging and social media for most travellers. If you stream video regularly, you'll hit the allowance and drop to the reduced speed — use Wi-Fi where available for video.
No. Booking a Grab ride uses minimal data — a few MB per ride. The map view in the app uses more, but overall Grab is light on data compared to streaming or social media.
Yes. Roamza's Thailand plans support hotspot. Data used via hotspot counts against your daily 1GB high-speed allowance, then continues at the reduced speed.
After 1GB of high-speed data per day, you get unlimited data at up to 512kbps. You stay connected for messaging and browsing, but video streaming will buffer.
