How Much Data Do You Need in Vietnam?
How much mobile data do you need in Vietnam? Compare light, everyday and heavy usage for Grab, Google Maps, Google Translate, messaging, streaming and overland travel.
Published 27 September 2026 · By Roamza
For most travellers, 500MB–1GB per day covers Grab, Maps, translation, messaging and social media. Heavy use (streaming, hotspot) can push this to 3–5GB. Roamza's current Vietnam plans give you 1GB of high-speed data per day, then unlimited at up to 384kbps.
How much data you need in Vietnam depends on how you travel — a few days in Hanoi uses less than a fortnight looping between cities and the coast. This guide breaks down typical usage with Vietnam-specific apps and scenarios.

How data usage works in Vietnam
Your phone uses data whenever it connects to the internet over mobile data (not Wi-Fi). In Vietnam, the apps you'll use most are different from Europe or the US:
- Grab — the dominant ride-hailing app for motorbike taxis and cars. Booking uses minimal data; the live map view uses more.
- Google Maps — navigation for Hanoi's Old Quarter, Ho Chi Minh City's districts and coastal roads. Active routing uses 120–150MB per hour.
- Google Translate — live camera translation for menus, signs and conversations. Camera translation uses data for each scan; downloaded language packs work offline.
- WhatsApp / Zalo — messaging. Zalo is Vietnam's most popular messaging app. Text uses very little data (5–10MB per hour).
- Social media — Facebook and Instagram are widely used. Browsing uses 100–200MB per hour; video autoplay pushes it to 500–800MB per hour.
- Streaming — Netflix or YouTube in standard definition uses around 1GB per hour; HD uses 3GB or more.
These are approximate estimates — actual usage varies based on app settings and video quality.
Light use: Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City city breaks
If you're in a city for a few days and mostly using Grab, Maps and messaging:
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour active) | 150MB |
| Grab (a few rides) | 20MB |
| Google Translate (occasional) | 30MB |
| WhatsApp + Zalo messaging | 10MB |
| Web browsing (1 hour) | 40MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~250MB |
For a 3–4 day city break, an unlimited daily plan covers this easily — the 1GB daily high-speed allowance is far more than you'll use. See the Vietnam plans page for current options.
Standard use: everyday Vietnam travel
Most travellers fall into this category — Grab, Maps, translation, social media, messaging and some music streaming.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (2 hours active) | 300MB |
| Grab (multiple rides) | 30MB |
| Google Translate (regular use) | 50MB |
| Social media (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Music streaming (2 hours) | 100MB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~630MB |
For a 1–2 week trip, an unlimited daily plan works well — 1GB of high-speed data per day covers most usage, and you never worry about running out.
Heavy use: streaming, hotspot and overland travel
If you're streaming video, sharing hotspot, or travelling overland between cities (overnight trains, long bus journeys):
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Social media (2 hours) | 300MB |
| Video streaming (2 hours SD) | 2GB |
| Video call (1 hour) | 400MB |
| Hotspot for laptop | 1–3GB+ |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~3–5GB+ |
For heavy use, the 1GB daily high-speed allowance will run out partway through the day. After that, you continue at up to 384kbps — enough for messaging and basic browsing, but streaming will buffer. Use Wi-Fi at hotels and cafes for video where available.
Overland travel: overnight trains and long buses
Vietnam overland travel is a special case. If you're on the Reunification Express train between Hanoi and Da Nang, or a long bus to the highlands, you'll have navigation and messaging running intermittently for hours. In the evening, you might stream at your hotel.
| Activity | Approx. data per day |
|---|---|
| Google Maps (2 hours intermittent) | 300MB |
| Messaging | 10MB |
| Social media (1 hour) | 150MB |
| Evening video streaming (1 hour SD) | 1GB |
| Daily total (approx.) | ~1.5GB |
For overland travel, the 1GB daily high-speed allowance covers navigation and messaging. Evening streaming will push you into the reduced-speed period — fine for messaging, but not for more video.
How FUP works on Vietnam plans
Roamza's current Vietnam plans are unlimited daily eSIMs, available in 1-day to 4-day durations. Each day you get 1GB of high-speed data, then unlimited data at up to 384kbps.
After the 1GB daily allowance, you stay connected at the reduced speed — enough for messaging, maps and basic browsing, but not for video streaming. Read more on the Fair Use page.

For most travellers, 500MB–1GB per day covers Grab, Maps, translation, messaging and social media. Heavy use (streaming, hotspot) can push this to 3–5GB or more.
Live camera translation uses data for each scan, but it's not heavy — roughly 30–50MB per day of regular use. You can also download Vietnamese language packs over Wi-Fi for offline translation.
1GB per day covers Grab, Maps, translation and messaging for most travellers. If you stream video regularly, you'll hit the allowance and drop to 384kbps — use Wi-Fi where available for video.
Yes. Roamza's Vietnam plans support hotspot. Data used via hotspot counts against your daily 1GB high-speed allowance, then continues at the reduced speed.
After 1GB of high-speed data per day, you get unlimited data at up to 384kbps. You stay connected for messaging and browsing, but video streaming will buffer.
