Airplane mode is your friend. Here's the simple, repeatable routine for staying connected abroad without a surprise bill waiting at home.

The 30-second version
Turn off data roaming before you land, buy an eSIM, and switch it on once you're through the gate. That's it. The rest is detail.
Why roaming bills happen
Your home carrier routes your data through a partner network abroad and charges you per megabyte — often $10/MB or more. A few minutes of background app refresh and you've spent more than your flight.
The routine that works everywhere
- Before you fly: buy a Roamza eSIM for your destination and install it.
- On the plane: turn on Airplane Mode. Leave it on.
- After you land: turn on the eSIM line and its data. Keep your home line off.
- Done. You're online on local rates, not roaming rates.
A couple of gotchas
- iMessage and WhatsApp still work over data — your home number just won't receive normal SMS while the home line is off. Tell people to reach you on WhatsApp.
- Background refresh chews data quietly. If you've got a limited plan, switch it off for apps you don't need.
- Hotspotting works on most plans — check the plan card before you buy if you need it.
The bottom line
Roaming isn't a fee you have to pay. It's a fee you have to not avoid. An eSIM is the avoidance.
